How free QR code generators actually compare

Checked August 2026

Most "free" QR code generators fall into two groups. Some produce genuinely permanent static codes with no account required. Others produce dynamic codes on a free trial, then switch off the redirect when the trial ends — which stops every printed code working at once. The distinction only matters after you have printed, which is exactly when it is too late to discover it.

Where the other option is stronger Plenty of free generators are perfectly good, particularly for static codes you never need to change. This page is about knowing which kind you are using before you commit to a print run, not about arguing that one tool wins.

Plans and limits change. These were checked in August 2026 — confirm current terms on the provider’s own pricing page before deciding.

Check whether the code is static or dynamic

Many generators create dynamic codes by default without saying so. If the tool offers editing or scan tracking, the code is dynamic and depends on their servers. If it works offline and cannot be edited, it is static and permanent.

Check what happens when a trial ends

This is the single most important question and the least advertised answer. Some providers keep codes resolving on the free tier; others disable the redirect, which breaks every printed code simultaneously. Read the terms before printing, not after.

Check for scan limits

A free tier capped at a few hundred scans a month will silently fail during a successful campaign — the moment you least want it to.

Prefer a destination on a domain you own

Whatever generator you use, pointing the code at your own domain means you can redirect it yourself if you ever change provider. That is the most durable arrangement available.

If you decide to switch

  • List every printed code you have in circulation and what it points to.
  • Identify which are static (permanent) and which are dynamic (dependent on a provider).
  • For dynamic ones, confirm what happens on that provider's free tier when a trial lapses.
  • Repoint anything critical at a URL on your own domain so you keep control.
